📖 What Happens When We Die?
🔷 First, we must understand what a Soul is…
The Bible defines a soul not as some disembodied spirit, but as a living person, created by the union of body and breath.
When these two come together, a soul exists. When they separate, the soul sleeps until the Resurrection, awaiting their reward (or punishment).
Genesis 2:7
✅ Soul = dust (body) + breath of life.
Job 27:3
✅ Breath (spirit) sustains life.
Ecclesiastes 12:7
✅ At death: body decays, breath (spirit) returns to God.
🔷 Death = Sleep
When body and breath separate, the person sleeps — unconscious — awaiting resurrection.
Job 14:12
✅ Death is like sleep until the resurrection.
Daniel 12:2
✅ The dead sleep in the dust awaiting their reward.
John 11:11-14
✅ Jesus said plainly that Lazarus was “sleeping” — meaning he was dead, unconscious.
Ecclesiastes 9:5-6
✅ The dead know nothing, have no more part in earthly life, and cannot communicate.
Job 14:21
✅ The dead are unaware of what happens to their loved ones on earth.
Psalm 115:17
✅ The dead do not praise the Lord, but are silent in the grave.
🔷 The dead are not in heaven right now
Even righteous King David remains in the grave.
Acts 2:29
✅ David is dead and buried.
Acts 2:34
✅ David has not ascended into the heavens.
🔷 At the resurrection, we are changed
At the last trumpet, Jesus raises the dead and gives immortality to His people.
1 Corinthians 15:52-53
✅ We are changed from mortal to immortal at the resurrection — not before.
🔷 Right now, only God is immortal
1 Timothy 6:15-16
✅ God alone inherently possesses immortality now.
🔷 The false teaching of an “immortal soul” immediately when they die
The Bible never teaches humans have an immortal soul right when they die — this idea came from pagan religions like Egypt and Babylon and has crept into Christian traditions.
✅ The word soul appears over 1,600 times in Scripture — yet “immortal soul” is never found.
🔷 ⚠️ The danger of believing the dead are conscious — Spiritualism
Believing that the dead can think, communicate, or appear to us is called Spiritualism — and it is not biblical.
✅ When people report seeing or hearing from dead loved ones, they are actually encountering demons impersonating the dead.
The Bible warns us that Satan and his demons (familiar spirits) can appear as angels of light or loved ones.
2 Corinthians 11:14
✅ “And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms himself into an angel of light.”
💡 Dear friend, do not be deceived:
- The dead are resting in the grave.
- They cannot think, feel, praise God, or communicate.
- They are awaiting the resurrection.
- Any “contact” with the dead is actually contact with evil spirits.
🔷 Hope and joy for those waiting in Christ
While the dead sleep in the grave and we remain here waiting, we have a wonderful promise to look forward to — the coming of Christ and the resurrection of His faithful.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
“For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.”
✅ Let us prepare our hearts each day, holding fast to this hope, living in faithfulness, and looking forward to the great event when Jesus calls His sleeping saints from the grave to eternal life.

🔷 Answer to the Question: What happens when we die?
- The body returns to dust.
- The breath of life (spirit) returns to God.
- The person (soul) ceases to function — it “sleeps” in the grave, unconscious.
- They await the resurrection when Jesus returns — then, and only then, are they raised to eternal life and changed from mortal beings into immortal beings.
- Until then, only God alone is immortal.
- The dead cannot communicate — any such appearances are demonic deceptions.
- Do not be deceived — cling to what the Bible teaches, not tradition or spiritualism.
✨ Dear reader, do not be deceived. Trust God’s Word, live for Christ daily, and prepare to meet Him at His coming!
