Jesus Said Moses Wrote About Him — John 5:46

John 5:46: “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.”

Jesus directly taught that Moses wrote about Him. Since Moses wrote the Torah — Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy — this means the first five books of Scripture contain direct Messianic prophecy, covenant promises, sacrificial shadows, priesthood imagery, tabernacle symbolism, feast-day patterns, and prophetic types that point forward to Christ.

Important: These are not all the same kind of evidence. Some are direct prophecies explicitly applied to Jesus in the New Testament. Others are typological patterns or redemptive shadows. Teach them honestly by keeping those categories distinct.

Key Teaching Point

When Jesus said, “Moses wrote of Me,” He was not making a vague statement. Moses wrote of Christ in direct prophecy, especially the Prophet like Moses in Deuteronomy 18:15-19, and also through the Torah’s sacrifices, priesthood, covenants, tabernacle, feasts, wilderness signs, and redemptive patterns.

  • Prophet: Deuteronomy 18:15-19 — Jesus speaks God’s words with final authority.
  • Seed: Genesis 3:15; Genesis 22:18 — Jesus is the promised seed.
  • Lamb: Exodus 12 — Jesus is the Passover Lamb.
  • Bread: Exodus 16 — Jesus is the true Bread from heaven.
  • Rock: Exodus 17; Numbers 20 — Christ is the Rock giving living water.
  • Priest: Genesis 14; Exodus 28; Leviticus 16 — Jesus is the true High Priest.
  • Sacrifice: Leviticus 1–7; Leviticus 17:11 — Jesus offers His blood once for all.
  • Lifted One: Numbers 21 — Jesus is lifted up for life and healing.
  • Curse-bearer: Deuteronomy 21:22-23 — Jesus bears the curse on the tree.
  • Feast fulfillment: Leviticus 23 — Jesus embodies the redemptive meaning of God’s appointed times.

The Torah is therefore not anti-Christ. It is one of the greatest witnesses TO Christ.

Important Apologetics Question

If Jesus said Moses wrote about Him, and if Peter directly applied Deuteronomy 18:15-19 to Jesus, then why would a believer treat Moses as irrelevant, abolished, disconnected from Christ, or contrary to the gospel?
